Virtual Story Time with Ocean Leaders

Our featured speaker will be E.W. Tekwa, a postdoc fellow at UBC Zoology will share their story of being different. They are an immigrant, first generation high school graduate, non-binary, neurodiverse, and work in transdisciplinary spaces across biology, economics, social science, math and statistics.

Join us to learn about entrepreneurial thinking tools and how to apply them to science and policy.  In this workshop led by Blair Simonite, Program Director of entrepreneurship@UBC, you will work “hands-on” on group activities where you will apply entrepreneurial thinking to a relevant policy scenario.

This is a two-part workshop with Margaret Krebs, from the Earth Leadership Program.

These sessions will build capacity to engage a group of people and enable them to think together.  Central to this ability is the skill of being able to ask questions to understand context: landscape, problem framing, future scenarios.

  • Learn frameworks and models for effective inquiry
  • Practice designing questions and interviewing
  • Develop the art of reciprocity and relationship-building

Research Partnerships with Indigenous Communities Workshop

Day 2 of this workshop will include a field trip hosted by the Musqueam Nation, including a guided tour of Musqueam lands and a visit to their Cultural Centre. Throughout the tour, we will draw on Musqueam perspectives to learn more about Indigenous-led research, focusing on aquatic sciences and fisheries management. We will be meeting in the Hakai Node at 11:00 am and making our way by bus and foot to the Musqueam reserve. If you are making your own way to the Musqueam reserve, the workshop begins at 12:30. You must have attended Day 1 of the workshop to take part in this field trip.

Hosted by UBC’s Indigenous Fisheries Research Unit at the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries and the Ocean Leaders program.

Join us for an introduction to research co-development and collaboration with Indigenous communities. This 2-day workshop will offer you the chance to discuss community-based aquatic science initiatives with First Nation scientists visiting from Haida Gwaii. This is Day 1 of the 2-day workshop. You must attend Day 1 to attend the Day 2 field trip based at the Musqueam Cultural Center Gallery.

25% of fish caught in the ocean don’t land directly on our plates. They’re churned into something called fishmeal. That fishmeal is mainly used to feed farmed fish, which account for more than half of the seafood we consume globally. But what are the true costs of this process? NBC News with UBC’s Global Reporting Program and three Ocean Leaders Fellows travelled to China, Peru and West Africa – key locations in the global fishmeal industry – to find out.

Chasing Coral Screening
